The Departed

This actually looks really good. Ole Jack looks like he’s perfect for the role, not to mention the rest of the all-star cast.

your thoughts?

martin scorsese’s gonna bring out a good one like usual.

I am a big fan of Scorsese, and am very excited about this one.
I will see it opening night.

ya me too. I rarely go see movies opening night cause’ I don’t know if their gonna suck or not. But this being a scorsese film I don’t think it will suck.
check out Infernal Affairs. Its a chinese movie that this is based off of (basically a remake)
Very well done, possibly DiCaprio’s best movie ever. and Mark Wahlberg’s best role too.

Lots of great twists and it really made you feel what it was like to be a mole.

I really think it was as good as Goodfellas.
that movie was pretty good until the last 2 minutes whereupon it became a complete pile of shit. I actually left the movie pissed off about the hollywood ending they tacked onto it.

The original is far superior simply because of the ending. Infernal Affairs kicks the shit out of this movie.

I have to take issue with this. Wahlberg was a cartoon character in this movie. All he had did was have stupid hair and say "fuck" alot. Anybody could’ve played that role.
I wanted to go see this movie really bad but have a sick kid so I wasnt able to. It is getting excellent reviews all around. Several saying it is the best movie of the year so far.
i didnt mind the shocking ending

the only beef i had was the over use of quick jokes and the lack of charater development with some of the cast

all in all i give it 4/5
movie was fucking awesome and in fact I liked the ending cause it didn’t conform to normal happy bullshit hollywood ending you fucking cunt ass faggot pure. you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. no this was not as good as goodfellas but definitely best scorsese movie ina long time.
great movie…..crazy ending…who ever said it was a typical hollywood ending, give me another movie where this happened
This movie was awesome. I wanted to see it from the first trailer I saw. I was not disappointed in the slightest. From the moment the movie started, until the rolling of the credits, I was blown away. The action was intense and I loved the story. Nicholson was as always a shining star. Everyone else played their parts extremely well. I cant think of a single bad thing about the movie.
Scorcese owns everything else. That said this was far from his best work though it was still a good movie. No one see it today wait until opening weekend is over so I can win my bet on it grossing under 22mil opening weekend.

Sorry, I meant it as a backhanded compliment since I really think Marky Mark was a much better rapper than an actor.

Oops, another backhanded compliment since he wasn’t a very good rapper either.
I think the thing I disliked most…SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

was the way Leo died, it was completely ridiculous and disjoint. They did a very poor job of tying this together. The guy that shot him benefited none from this action and the whole line about not being the only one on the payroll and having to look out for each other made no sense. I feel like the point was to make it obvious that Frank had many people is his pocket. This point had already been made when the FBI guy was killed and didn’t rat Leo out. At this point Frank being dead none of his informants were at risk, so the entire interaction seemed absurd.

I thought it was a good movie but I didn’t like it. I wouldn’t really want to sit down and watch it again.
Spoiler question:
The dead cop in the marsh, was he really an undercover guy? Or just a scheme by the cops to cover for Leo?
Saw it last night. Great movie!
Not your typical Hollywood "everything works out" ending though so be prepared.

leo had all of costello’s tapes

lots of dirt in there , but im not sure how many people knew leo had the tapes?
The shooting of Leo made great sense to me. He was about to rat out the mole.

Yes he was going to rat out the mole, but how was that relevant to the guy that killed him. The guy who shot him was a character loosely drawn into the story. He benifited in no way by killing leo. I don’t take issue with leo dying but to have a random person with no history come into the scene whos purpose is irrelevant pretty much ruined it for me. This character could have even spared his own life by staying out of the situation. His insignificance is shown by the fact that he is removed from the story just as fast as he entered.

i completely agree with the lack of character development. In the chinese one, you could feel more of the suffering the characters are going thru (both moles)

the american one was still really good. the chinese one was just a bit better IMO.

It’s obvious the only people who liked the american one better are the ones who haven’t even seen the original. Comments about the "non-typical hollywood ending" are dead giveaways. The ending was completely different than infernal affairs, and it was tacked on BY hollywood.

In the original, damon’s character doesn’t die, he gets away with everything. Having Damon killed was Hollywood’s idea, because you can’t let the bad guy win

I’ve based my opinion on seeing both. Most people have have only seen "the departed" and liked it alot, leading them to think it’s better than "Infernal Afairs." Well I tell you, a hamburger is pretty good until you’ve tasted steak.

That’s because the original is part of a trilogy, the guy dies in the end anyways.
What was in the letter that Bill (William) gave to the Shrink?

Do i have to wait for it on DVD?

exactly. Since they was NO way they would make this into a trilogy as well, IMO it was a perfect way to wrap everything up in the one moviel. IMO the guy who was found in the marsh wasnt really an undercover agent, they just said that in the news to throw off costello from searching for the real rat (he said so himself). The guy who shoots leo in the end obviosly benefitted from NOT having him expose matt damon (which wouldve probably exposed him too in as collateral damage). and IMO the letter he gave to the shrink explained everything and gave her instructions about the tapes that the lawyer had, etc. I think it was she who gave the info to Digman

excellent movie.

What was in the letter that Bill (William) gave to the Shrink?

Do i have to wait for it on DVD?

probably his identity or the recorded conversations
it was pretty obvious that the guy in the marsh was a cop, thats why when he knew leo was a cop too, he didn’t rat him out. Hence why he asks Leo why he thinks he didn’t rat him out, and then you find out hes a cop

My opinion was information on everything that had happened in case he died and to contact Walbergs character if he died.

BUT, i don’t dig that deep into movies so this is a very obvious explanation to me

wtf was the gold dome about? Why did they keep referencing that. Yes he had a mega bucks penthouse, i know how he got that, but what am i missing
I think the gold dome is meant to show Law & Order, being a good citizen.

And I thought they had great character development about how tough being a mole is.
Matt Damon was unable to get it up and Leo was popping pills just to deal with the fear of being found.

he died before he could say anything, but later its made pretty obvious iMO that it was just a ploy to get Costello to think that the guy who died was the rat, so they stopped looking.
he doesnt profit, IMO it was just revenge, and the fact that everything will get out into the public…

not everyone in the cops knew costello was an informant, and even if they did, it would not be impossible that he would still be "hunted by" the cops or at least they would appear to be after him…

I dont understand why dingam kills matt damon in the end? how does he profit from this?

also, how could costello be an informant for the cops while being hunted by them at the same time?

Happens all the time, the Feds & local law enforcement not working together.

I think it made the movie even better. Moles in both the police and gangsters. And even the head gangster is a mole while searching for his internal mole.
hrm. I hadn’t heard it was a remake of Infernal Affairs. I’m doubly stoked to see it now.
SPOILER WARNING:

Old thread but there’s my opinion.. I agree with Pure… even tho i havent seen the original… it wasnt all too great. The ending was way too fast (tried to put couple hours of story into 2 minutes). It WAS a hollywood ending in the fact that Scorse, like typical directors now a days, try to break free from traditional feel-good movies by having something over dramatic; and in turn, chooses the typical "lets have everyone die". Well, shakespeare perfected it in his time and it doesn’t work in this film. The story doesnt build up to it nor does it contain any fore-shadowing. The characters were unreal and undeveloped. I thought this movie was over-hyped. I would relate this movie to Mulholland Drive, in a sense that the director tries too hard to make the movie "smart".
I finally got a chacne to watch the first part of Infernal Affairs. Gonna try to get the other two in this weekend. I really liked both movies. I thought The Departed was better simply because I could get immersed in the story more than Infernal Affairs. I didnt have to keep reading. Other than that IA was an awesome movie.
I dont see what the big deal is on them being different. Even the creator of AI said he really enjoyed the Departed. His only complaint was they said "Fuck" a lot. He liked the differences.
As far as the development went, I dont see how that really matters. I think character development on the guy that killed Leo’s character would have taken away from the punch. You would have seen it a mile away. They used the same strategy in IA.
I finally got to see this movie six months after I wanted to.

It was a good movie but not near as good as people made it out to be. Everyone kept saying that it had a shocking twist ending, what the hell is so shocking about everyone dieing in a mob movie? Nothing, it is what I would of expected if everyone hadnt told me there was a shocking twist at the end. I thought Leo’s death was crap. Its not that he died but how he died. Having some character with no development kill him off was dumb.
It’s a really good movie. I want to check out Internal Affairs.
I absolutely loved this movie, Mark Wahlbergs character made me laugh my ass off.
This Movie is Great, Jack Nicholson is Huge

I don’t really like Léo but he’s very good in this movie, it’s good for him to play in Scorsese’s Movies.

Matt damon has no charisma, but he’s not bad in this movie
